Chin Filler

Profile balance and projection — non-surgical chin enhancement that improves the entire side view.

Medically reviewed by Richard Maxwell, MD ·

Chin projection is one of the most underestimated features in facial balance. A retruded chin makes the lower face look short, the jawline soft, and the neck-to-chin angle indistinct. Filler-based chin augmentation balances the profile, sharpens the jawline, and produces transformative results from 1–2 syringes. It's also reversible — patients who want to test how a more projected chin looks before committing to a chin implant can do so safely.

Chin filler is placed deep on the bony chin, typically using a needle for precision into bony landmarks. Structural HA products (Voluma, Lyft) are required — softer products like Volbella don't produce enough projection. Most patients build over two appointments rather than placing maximum volume at once. The chin and jawline are continuous; treating only the chin can leave a slightly disjointed look if the lateral jaw also needs definition. We typically discuss combined chin + jaw protocols at consultation. Contraindications include active infection in the lower face, autoimmune disease on biologics, allergy to hyaluronidase, pregnancy, and blood-thinning medications. Severe retrusion may need a chin implant rather than filler — we refer when surgical augmentation is the better tool.

Key Benefits

1Improves chin projection and balances side profile
2Sharpens the jawline as a side effect (the chin anchors the front of the mandible line)
31–2 syringes typically produces visible improvement
4Reversible — HA filler dissolves with hyaluronidase
5Lasts 12–24 months due to minimal chin movement
6Often paired with jawline filler for full lower-face contouring

Common questions

Frequently asked

Will chin filler change my profile?

Often dramatically. The classic "weak profile" — chin sitting behind a vertical line dropped from the lower lip — can transform with 1–2 syringes. Patients are often surprised at how much improving the chin sharpens the entire side view.

Chin filler vs chin implant?

Filler is non-surgical, immediately reversible, and ideal for mild-to-moderate retrusion or testing how a more projected chin looks before committing surgically. An implant is permanent, more dramatic, and the right call for significant retrusion or patients who don't want filler maintenance.

Should I add jaw filler too?

Almost always, yes. The chin and jawline are anatomically continuous. Treating only the chin can leave a slightly disjointed look if the lateral jaw also needs definition. Most patients seeking lower-face contouring benefit from a combined plan.

How long does chin filler last?

12–24 months. Some patients see results persist 2+ years before maintenance because the chin has minimal movement compared to other facial areas.
